A fitting tribute

Like, I imagine, all Star readers, I was horrified at the brutal murder of Jo Cox MP, last week.

Her husband, parents and family have behaved with the utmost dignity, emphasising the positives of her life and have now set up a fund to support three great causes in the UK and Syria.

Not once have they talked of retribution or hatred or supported the return of the death penalty. They know that it was something to which Jo was implacably opposed.

So I was sorry to read a letter calling for a return to hanging or death by lethal injection.

We know that the death penalty acts as no deterrent.

If it did, then there would be zero murders in the USA and other countries that still have it.

The death penalty is plainly wrong for a modern civilised society.

As Gandhi said: “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”

Instead of blinding ourselves, we all need to work with others in our communities to make the world a better place for everyone to live in. This would be a more fitting tribute to Jo Cox.
