Fit for the future

The Star (front page, August 19) announced that a proposed Sheffield to Manchester road tunnel would boost the city's economy and create jobs.

Encouraging more long journeys will work against this aim, even if there is a gradual move to low-emission vehicles.

Instead, more imaginative transport plans should be devised, including initiatives to ensure more workplaces are close to where people live.

Plenty of investment is needed in other areas, including public transport, home insulation and renewable energy, to ensure our economy is fit for the future – see http://www.climate-change-jobs.org/
