The echo of football chants and beating of Samba drums will signal the start of Sheffield’s World MenCup, as it gets underway at Bawtry Road Sports Park this afternoon.

The World Cup inspired charity event, in aid of Sheffield Mencap, will feature teams of players representing countries from around the world, plus themed entertainment and Brazilian food. The event has been organised by four Event Management students from Sheffield Hallam University, who were tasked with creating an event from scratch with no budget, as part of their final module.

Chelsey Southern, Katie Whiteway, Fabia Palmer, and Natalie Prew decided to raise funds for Sheffield Mencap after discovering the drastic cuts to the charity’s funding.Chelsey told The Star: “The great work Sheffield Mencap does was in jeopardy as a result of budget cuts and new changes in regulations, so we set about creating this charity day and it really has taken on a life of its own.

“We hope this event will not only raise funds, but also awareness and long-term support for this fantastic charity.”
