In northern England, four postcode areas missed the local first class performance target of having at least 91.5 per cent of post delivered the next working day.

Nationally, the Royal Mail met the local minimum target for first class post delivered the next working day in 98 of the UK’s 118 postcode areas, down from 116 in the previous quarter.

Judith Donovan, CBE, Chairman of Postwatch Northern England said: “The good news is that Royal Mail is on course to meet 11 of its 12 national targets, including first and second class post.

“However, we are concerned that certain areas are falling short. More postcode areas throughout the UK failed the minimum target than in the previous quarter, and the Hull, Darlington, Leeds and Crewe areas are particular cause for concern in Northern England. Royal Mail must redouble its efforts to ensure all customers get the service they pay for. We hope the Royal Mail can address the shortcomings swiftly.”
