Firms spend £7m on new buses in Rotherham

Bus companies in Rotherham have spent £7 million on 30 new vehicles operating on routes to and from Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster.

Stagecoach has introduced 10 new single decker vehicles on its 22X route between Barnsley, Wombwell, Wath, Manvers, Parkgate and Rotherham.

The bus carries more passengers than its predecessor and is 200kg lighter, making it more fuel efficient.

Rotherham Council’s Advisory Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Coun Denise Lelliott, said: “There’s never been a better time to visit Rotherham, particularly given our recent success in the Great British High Street awards.

“The introduction of these fleet of vehicles by First South Yorkshire and Stagecoach Yorkshire means passengers can travel here in luxurious comfort, as well as knowing that they are doing more than their bit for the environment.

“So it really is worth hopping on your local bus and coming to Rotherham to find out why we officially have Britain’s best town centre High Street.”
