Firefighters tackle South Yorkshire grassland blaze

A huge grassland fire at a former pit is sending smoke billowing across the sky in Rotherham.

Firefighters are currently at the former Thurcroft Colliery site off New Orchard Lane, Thurcroft.

Crews from Aston, Maltby and Parkway station were called to the scene at around 4pm on Tuesday to deal with another grassland fire.

A fire service spokesman said around 400 square metres of grassland was on fire this afternoon.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
