Firefighters tackle flat fire in Sheffield started by ‘discarded cigarette’ left in lounge

Firefighters dealt with a blaze in a Sheffield flat last night which is believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette.

Three crews were deployed to the flat on Southey Avenue, Longley, at 7.55pm and found that the fire had started in the lounge.

They believe a discarded cigarette was to blame.

Nobody was in the flat when the blaze broke out.

Earlier this week crews in Sheffield dealt with a fire in a house on Whirlowdale Road, Whirlow, which involved a fuse board.

And three crews were sent to a house fire on Bellhouse Road, Shiregreen, which has been logged as ‘accidental’.

The occupant had managed to escape from the burning property before firefighters arrived.

They also dealt with bins deliberately set alight on Halliwell Crescent, Parson Cross and on Bernard Street, Hyde Park.

Anyone with information about the arson attacks should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
