Firefighters spent five hours rescuing a cow stuck in a canal in Doncaster.

A team of water rescue specialists were deployed to Marsh Lane, Barnby Dun, after a cow was found trapped in the canal yesterday morning.

Firefighters were alerted to the incident at 9.15am and left the scene at 2pm.

They launched a boat into the canal and guided the cow to safety after ushering it two miles upstream to some low banking.

The cow was pulled out with a harness.

Over the same weekend firefighters were called upon to help a swan in Rotherham which swallowed a fishing hook.

The RSPCA asked for firefighters to help get the bird out of the River Don, near Rotherham Railway Station.

They placed an inflatable walkway onto the water and to reach the bird.
