He said the engine's blue lights were sounding as it left the motorway and headed towards Barlborough.

He said he believes the engine may have toppled over after clipping a kerb.

The two firefighters trapped in the engine cab escaped with cuts and bruises.

Mr Lawal, a mobile carpet cleaner said: "I was travelling in front of the fire engine and could see the blue flashing lights behind me as it pulled off the motorway.

"I then heard a screech and the engine overturned and then scraped along the road.

"I ran up to it with a lorry driver, who also stopped, and there were two firemen trapped in the cab, dazed."

He added: "We pulled off a sunlight and helped the firefighters out.

"They were cut and bruised but not seriously injured.

"An ambulance then arrived and another fire engine."

Highways England said there are delays on the M1 north and southbound exit slip roads at junction 30 because of the incident.

The A616 eastbound is closed while a recovery and clean-up operation is mounted.
