Firefighters at two new Sheffield stations tackle 200 blazes in one year

Fire chiefs gave the go-ahead for new stations to be built in Birley Moor and off the Parkway, near the Mosborough exit, to replace aging stations in Darnall, Mosborough and Intake.

The old sites are in the process of being sold and the hope is that the new buildings will be more efficient to run.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “It’s now a year since Sheffield’s two newest fire stations began responding to emergency incidents for the first time.

“Since then there have been more than 1,200 emergency incidents in the station areas they cover, including more than 200 fires involving property.

“With the opening of the new stations, Darnall, Mansfield Road and Mosborough stations closed after reaching the end of their operational lives.

"The new, full-time station at Birley Moor covers a much greater area of South Yorkshire than the existing part-time station at Mosborough, right on the Derbyshire border, was able to. It now houses one full time and one part time fire engine, plus some specialist vehicles.

"Darnall and Mansfield Road stations were built to address risks in Sheffield’s major industrial sites, including the city’s major steelworks, but the new Parkway station is better placed to protect new housing developments in the area, plus road traffic collisions on the Parkway and the nearby road infrastructure. It houses a full time fire engine and an aerial appliance."
