Automatic fire sprinklers are to be installed in a sheltered accommodation complex in Barnsley.

Churchfields sheltered housing, part of Berneslai Homes, has been awarded funding for the retrofitting of fire sprinklers in a bid to improve the safety of residents.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Authority’s awarded £49,500 from its Stronger Safer Communities Reserve to pay for the work.

Dozens of registered charities and community organisations applied for grants from the £2 million fund, which was set aside from the Authority’s reserves.

Roger Brason, of South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, said: “Automatic fire sprinklers are most effective during the initial stage of a fire occurring, as a properly installed sprinkler will detect the flames heat, initiate an alarm, and activate just moments after the flames appear and can quickly suppress a fire before it gets out of control.”

Berneslai Homes’ Community Buildings Manager, Jill Barker, said: “We were delighted to hear that we had been awarded funding towards fitting a sprinkler system in one of our sheltered housing schemes. They are an excellent way of protecting both people and buildings.”
