South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is working towards becoming dementia friendly.

Bosses have has signed up to the Dementia Action Alliance.

Sarah Broadbent, of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue comes across people living with dementia in their own homes on a regular basis and the training that we have received from Alzheimer’s Society really helps our officers to understand the condition better and how we can adapt our approach when we meet someone with the condition.

“There are a lot of people with dementia who live on their own and they can be very vulnerable to the risk of fire and may be frightened by having an officer call on them for a routine job like fixing a smoke alarm.”
