FIRE officers are investigating the cause of a huge fire which ripped through a barn at a South Yorkshire farm.

Fire crews were still damping down at Brecks Lane Farm, Brecks Lane, Rotherham yesterday evening following the blaze on Saturday.

A full investigation is set to begin once the fire is completely extinguised.

At the height of the incident residents living close to the farm were warned to keep windows and doors closed.

Motorists were also advised to avoid the area for several hours.

A plume of thick, black smoke came from farm building after the fire started.

The building contained farm machinery, diesel fuel and other farming equipment.

Four fire engines and up to 20 firefighters from Rotherham, Darnall and Elm Lane fire stations were called to the incident at around 4.20pm.

Firefighters used main jets to bring the flames under control.
