Firefighters cordoned off a street in the city centre after smoke was reported to be billowing out of a grate on the pavement.

A crew was called to Flat Street, opposite Sheffield Interchange, at 6.50pm.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “A large grate in the pavement was issuing what appeared to be smoke or steam.

“We have requested the council to attend and one fire engine remained on the site standing by until they arrived.”
