FIRE chiefs are calling for people to be vigilant to stop blazes breaking out while South Yorkshire is gripped by drought.

The Environment Agency said South Yorkshire is experiencing drought conditions this week, with low river levels because of a lack of rain.

A South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokeswoman said: “As the vegetation becomes drier, members of the public are urged to take extra care and be vigilant to fires occurring. This will enable fire crews to play their part in conserving water supplies.”
