Fire chiefs in South Yorkshire are recruiting on-call firefighters to boost numbers at stations across the county.

They want retained firefighters to be available to respond to emergencies from stations in Penistone, Stocksbridge, Askern, Rossington and Dearne.

Firefighters, who would be expected to be available between 8am and 5pm, will be provided full training.

They will receive an annual retaining fee of £2,158, rising to £2,877 when deemed competent, plus an hourly rate of £9.86, rising to £13.14 when competent, for incidents they respond to and training they undertake.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “This role will involve providing cover as an operational firefighter by responding to incidents on an on-call basis and undertaking training and other work as necessary.

“Information sessions for individuals wishing to apply will be held.

“Expressions of interest are particularly encouraged from women and members of ethnic minority groups who are under-represented in the role of firefighter.”

Applicants must be aged at least 18 and be able to reach the stations within five minutes.
