Fir Vale schools learn how to save the planet

Children from Whiteways Primary and Owler Brook Primary, both in Fir Vale, have taken time away from their usual timetable to create an exhibition for family and friends.

Each year the pupils spend two weeks focusing on a chosen topic to improve their skills – in particular, how to be resourceful, reciprocal, reflective and resilient.

This year the children learned about the Earth through various subjects to create an exhibition.

Both schools visited each others’ displays.

Head of school at Whiteways, Jennie Nixon, said: “At both schools, this week has been a fabulous opportunity for children to work together on small and large scales, investigate global issues together and take pride in their exhibition.

“Every child has taken part and contributed their best efforts towards the final outcome. We are all very proud of what has been achieved.”

Year One children learned about the contributions animals make to creating a sustainable life cycle while Year Two were taught about recycling.

Year Three were taught the importance of water to stay healthy and are now aiming to raise £300 for Water Aid to provide a well.

Fair Trade goods were discussed in Year Four which saw the children track the air miles of their clothes.

Year Five discovered endangered species around the world and the Year Six children learnt about the pollution caused by plastics in the oceans.
