The Olympic Velodrome will take on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new theatre complex in competing for the UK’s top architecture award – set to be announced in Rotherham.

The winner of the annual Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize 2011 will be crowned at the Magna Science Adventure Centre on October 1.

The six finalists include the Velodrome, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford Upon Avon, An Gaelaras cultural centre in Derry, The Angel Building in Islington, London, the Evelyn Grace Academy in Herne Hill, London, and the Folkwang Museum, in Essen, Germany.

The prize-giving in Rotherham will be broadcast in an edition of BBC2’s The Culture Show, hosted by Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud, on October 2.
