Some 232,000 people took part in research, commissioned as part of the Civil Aviation Authority’s 2014 passenger survey.

Of the 11 English airports surveyed, East Midlands has the smallest proportion of public transport users at seven per cent, while Stansted has the highest at 50 per cent.

CAA policy director Tim Johnson said: “This raises the question whether each of the airports has the optimum balance of public and private transport options, and whether passengers are aware of all their options for getting to the airports.”

The survey found that 93 per cent of passengers departing from Doncaster travel for leisure.
