Ferguson '˜the right man for Doncaster Rovers' - McSheffrey

But loan man Gary McSheffrey is convinced that, despite the desperate situation Doncaster find themselves in, Ferguson is the right man for Rovers.

In today’s cut throat footballing industry, manager’s have been sacked up and down the land for a lot less than the quite incredible dry spell that has thrust Rovers on the verge of a return to the fourth tier of English football for the first time since 2004.

However, experienced forward McSheffrey has been impressed with Ferguson since joining Rovers from local rivals Scunthorpe United last month - and he is adamant that the Scot is a good fit for the Keepmoat Stadium hot seat.

“I think he’s really good,” McSheffrey told The Star.

“His attention to detail is really good and tactically he seems bang on with everything.

“I really respect his opinion.

“I think he’s the right man for this place and I’m really enjoying working with him.”

McSheffrey, who was brought in to help provide a link between Rovers’ midfield and their mis-firing attack, is set to retain his place tomorrow at home to league leaders Wigan Athletic.

Languishing eight points from safety with just five matches left to play, it is a game Rovers simply have to take by the scruff of the neck and come away from with maximum points if they harbour any ambitions of pulling off a late escape act.

For McSheffrey and his teammates, it is also now about personal pride.

“Every game for a professional, in whatever trade you do, you’ve got to have pride,” said the 33-year-old.

“But hugely now, for us, it’s about pride.

“We’re in a dogfight down there and there’s no hiding from that.

“In these remaining games we’ll do our utmost to get out of it and do the fans proud.”

Meanwhile, another Rovers loanee, Lynden Gooch has spoken in glowing terms about his spell at Doncaster - despite not featuring in a winning team before injury brought his season to an early end.

“It was really good to get the opportunity to go out on loan and get that kind of first-team experience,” Gooch told Sunderland’s official website.

“It was great to play more games, get more experience and hopefully it will help my situation at Sunderland.

“I played seven games and I enjoyed every minute of it.

“Obviously the results didn’t go the way I would’ve liked but it was still a great experience nevertheless.”

He added: “It’s a different game because there is pressure and you don’t always feel that being in the under-21s team. We had a few local derbies as well so it was good to get a taste for that and experience the kind of pressure those games bring.”
