Sheffield journalist Rachel Parry has a job a million girls would die for - working as a wedding blogger.
Here she reveals what the role really involves in a special feature for The Star’s sister magazine Profile.
“Is life as a wedding blogger an inspiring and enjoyable job? Heck yes! Does it just involve looking at pretty images of weddings all day – er, unfortunately not.
Contrary to what many think, the job isn’t all about the ‘fluff’ - imagination, creativity and a bucket loads of elbow grease are required to deliver fresh, daily inspiration to thousands of brides-to-be in the north and beyond – but that doesn’t mean to say I don’t love my job as features editor of Brides Up North.
Set up by creator and editor in chief Julia Braime in 2010, Brides Up North has skyrocketed in popularity and profile to become one of the most visited UK wedding blogs.
This means that my and Julia’s working week is busy, varied and beautiful – so what does a typical day at Brides Up North HQ entail?
Updating our social media channels. In addition to the blog, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are how we reach the majority of readers so it’s important to post several times a day with fresh, inspirational content and details of our blog posts.
Emails. Just as is with any other job, there is admin to be done, mainly keeping up to date with our featured wedding suppliers, requesting and accepting real wedding submissions and organising events, photoshoots and meetings.
Brainstorm and schedule feature ideas. It’s important to keep content on the blog varied for readers whilst also setting ourselves apart from other online publications so we’re constantly coming up with new feature ideas to make our pages extra pretty and exciting!
Writing. Be it a cool real wedding, look book fashion feature or a spotlight post on a talented northern wedding supplier, we post at least two features a day Monday to Friday. In addition to Brides Up North, Julia and I also manage the editorial content for luxury wedding magazine Unveiled, meaning more writing as well as organising and styling high-end photoshoots.
Making plans for upcoming wedding fairs. As part of the Brides Up North brand we host over 30 luxury wedding fairs a year at stunning venues through Yorkshire as well as the North East and North West. This involves a lot of planning to ensure we have the very best wedding suppliers at our events and that they all run perfectly.
Attending launch/networking events. We’re fortunate to be invited to glam industry events, from new collection catwalk shows to venue launches and award ceremonies – this is where we get to dress up and drink champagne!
