Police have today confirmed the cause of death of a dad who died in a Penistone house fire along with his nine-year-old son.

Darren Sykes, 44, and his son Paul Sykes died following the fire at a house on Tennyson Close, Penistone, on Wednesday night.

Paul’s brother Jack Sykes, aged 12, was pulled out of the fire alive and remains in a critical condition in hospital with mum Claire is by his side.

A police spokesman said today: “A post mortem examination carried out yesterday revealed Mr Sykes’ cause of death was compatible with the effects of the fire.

“Further tests are to be carried out on Paul to establish the cause of death.”

Detectives said within hours of the blaze that it was being treated as suspicious.

But police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

One of the theories police are looking at is that Darren started the blaze. His marriage to Claire had broken down and she had moved out with the children.

“Initial investigations suggest the fire was started deliberately”, added the spokesman.

Yesterday heart-breaking cards and letters written by grieving schoolchildren were left at the scene.
