A FATAL collision caused major disruption on the M1 in South Yorkshire.
The incident happened on the northbound carriageway between junctions 37, at Birdwell, and 38, near Dodworth, Barnsley.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: “A fatal collision, involving a lorry and a pedestrian, happened at about 12.30pm on the northbound carriageway between junctions 37 and 38 of the motorway west of Barnsley.
“A South Yorkshire Police accident investigation is under way.”
The motorway was initially closed in both directions after the collision – although the southbound carriageway had reopened by mid afternoon.
The M1’s closure caused big delays for traffic which was diverted onto local roads, leading to further gridlock in the Barnsley area.
Police have not yet released any details about the cause of the collision, the identity of the deceased or what they were doing in the road.
Electronic message signs on motorways were advising drivers travelling long distances to avoid the affected section of the M1.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm a fatal collision occurred on the M1 at about 12.30pm on Friday and that the motorway was closed.
“An investigation is taking place into what happened and we would appeal for witnesses to come forward.”
■ Anyone with information about the fatal collision is urged to call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
