Farewell to Owls man Reg

Have your say

SHEFFIELD-born former Sheffield Wednesday defender Reg Stewart has died at the age of 85.

Stewart, a “gangling centre half” according to Owls who’s who book The Wednesday Boys, made six league appearances at Hillsborough before joining Colchester United for a fee of £1,000.

He was Colchester’s captain in their first Football League match at Gillingham in August 1950 and spent nine seasons at the club.

After retirement Stewart – a relative of legendary Wednesday full-back Ernie Blenkinsop, whose old football boots he wore in his schoolboy days – became an accomplished after-dinner speaker. Colchester United will pay tribute to Stewart at their home game with MK Dons on Saturday.

He passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning.
