Fantastic tribute

It was with great sadness that I learned that one of the runners, a soldier, collapsed and died in the recent London Marathon.

I know that I speak for every one of the many thousands of runners that all our thoughts are with his family at this heartbreaking time.

It also must be devastating to the organisers who put so much into making the marathon such a great event.

Having done more than 960 races over the years I can say that the safety and welfare of all the runners is uppermost.

This not only applies to the big events such as London, the Great North Run and all the big city marathons, but also the smaller ones put on by running clubs all over the country.

The organisers do a brilliant job – the marshals, water stations, police, medical staff and numerous others all volunteer their services to put on a marathon.

So it is a great tribute to the soldier that some of his friends from the Army are going to finish the marathon for him.
