Fan's View: Why Carlos Carvalhal has to stay at Sheffield Wednesday

Yet I find myself bewildered by the hysteria that has fallen over a large number of Wednesdayites in recent weeks. Modern football equates to short memories sadly

This is a head coach who has led us into the play-offs two seasons in a row, given us more memorable moments than we've had combined since relegation from the Premier League, and turned us into a club that wins matches again.

Does anyone else remember the previous 20 years before he arrived? Since the 1996-97 season when we finished 7th in the Premier League, we have finished in the top half of any league four times. We were the only Yorkshire side yet to have gone to the new Wembley and Hillsborough very rarely sold out. Carvalhal has literally turned the club around, finished 6th, 4th and the crowds have come back.

We started his two previous season slowly too and everything turned out well in the end, nothing is won in October yet it can be lost. We're still only a handful of points from the play-offs, clearly this isn't the time to panic.

One of the main arguments against Carvalhal is his record against teams around the bottom. It could certainly improve, but with our league positions during his tenure, he must be picking up points from somewhere, right?

Sure we only got one point from Burton last season, but we did get six from Newcastle. We lost at Bolton last weekend, but we also went and won at Fulham.

Critics also point to his record in big games, the play-offs of course used as an example. All I'd say is that at least he is taking us into those sorts of games, games that we haven't had since the 1993 cup finals. As for money spent, of the current 24 teams in the Championship, Wednesday are 11th for players purchased in the past three seasons, not quite fitting the popular narrative that we're simply trying to buy promotion.

If we're still 12th in April then I will agree with the fans calling for Carlos' head. But for now I'm 100% backing a manger with a proven track record with Sheffield Wednesday. He's turned numerous players in our side into some of the best in the league (Lees, Bannan, Lee to name three) yet perhaps he's a victim of his own success.

Expectations have risen because of his excellent record as Wednesday manager. Hopefully, there are many more victories to come under Carvalhal.
