Fan leaves touching message on Gordon Banks’ plaque outside Sheffield Town Hall

A heartfelt message alongside a single red rose has been left on Gordon Bank’s Walk of Fame plaque outside Sheffield Town Hall.

The England World Cup-winner passed away during the night at the age of 81 according to a statement released by his family. 

Banks made 628 appearances during a 15-year career in the Football League, and won 73 caps for his country and is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.

The Tinsley-born star was England’s goalkeeper in the summer of 1966 when England defeated West Germany 4-2 in the World Cup Final; turning him into a household name and national hero.

Tributes have continued to flood in throughout the day from the world of football, including Jamie Vardy, Harry Maguire, Kevin Pressman, Gary Lineker, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. 

Banks is one of a number of local icons to have been honoured with a spot on the Sheffield Legeds Walk of Fame outside Sheffield Town Hall. 

Following news of hs death, a single red rose was left on his plaque by a Wolves fan along with a touching message.

The message read: “Rest peacefully Gordon – you helped make football come home and gave us memories to forever cherish. 

“Full love your family. Kashmire (Wolves fan).”

Banks made one of the game's great saves to prevent a Pelé goal in the 1970 World Cup, regarded as one of the best of all-time, but his career was ended in 1972 when a car crash cost him his sight in one eye.

He was born and brought up in Tinsley, later moving to Catcliffe and began his football career with Sheffield Schoolboys.
