Family pay tribute to ‘loveable rogue and fantastic father’ who took his own life

A coroner has called the death of a Barnsley dad a profound tragedy after recording a verdict that he intended to take his own life.

An inquest into the death of Jami Clay of Royd Avenue Cudworth held in Sheffield heard how police were unable to resuscitate him after he was found lying on his bed.

Assistant coroner Stephen Eccleston concluding the inquest by way of documents said the family of Mr Clay, 33 a warehouse operative, had become worried after he had not been seen all day on February 6 2020.

His partner Sharnee Taylor contacted the police and they forced open the doors of his house when they had received no response from him.

In a statement PC Keiran Baker said he had been met by family members outside the house.

The key was still in the lock and he had forced entry. Following a search of the house Mr Clay was found in an upstairs bedroom.

Police and ambulance staff had used CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The medical cause of death was given as Codeine toxicity, with underlying use of other prescription medications.

There were no suspicious circumstances and Mr Clay had not left any note or indication of what he was going to do.

The inquest was told Mr Clay had a background of depression and had made a previous attempt to take his own life in 2018.

Given this context, the quantity of medication take and the blister packs around the bed taken Mr Eccleston said he had reached the conclusion that Jami probably had intended to take his own life.

Mr Eccleston said: “I record my most sincere condolences to his family. There is no doubt it is a profound tragedy when someone ends their own life.”

Jami’s family have paid tribute to him in an online celebration of his life.

On his funeral notice where they asked for donations in his memory to the mental health charity MIND, they said: “Jami was a loveable rogue with a good sense of humour that many people became victim to. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone if they were in need of help. He was loved and adored by many including his daughter Sienna, his brothers Brett, Cavan and Ryan his girlfriend Sharnee as well as his many friends.

“He loved the outdoors, fishing, camping and walking which he loved to do with his dog Spartan and his daughter Sienna that he adored. He was a fantastic father to Sienna and loved her unconditionally. His other passion was his motorbike which he would often go out on visiting places up on the moors or the dales.”
