A South Yorkshire holidaymaker plunged to his death from the 15th floor of a Spanish hotel after telling his wife he was missing her and couldn’t wait to get home.

Married dad of two Jamie Deakin - who had gone away with six friends - phoned wife Susan for a chat at one in the morning as the party’s four-day break in Benidorm drew to a close.

The former miner, 54, told Susan he was looking forward to flying home, adding: “Night sweetheart - I’ll see you when I get home.”

Just an hour or two later Jamie fell from the balcony of his hotel room. Mystery today surrounded the tragedy as police await reports from Spanish authorities.

Speaking at the couple’s semi in Thurnscoe, Rotherham, wife Susan said: “I don’t think we’ll ever get to the bottom of it.

“The Spanish authorities have said it could be suicide, but I don’t believe that at all, and neither does anyone in the family. I think he slipped and fell.

“Jamie had been on the phone every night, and he said he’d enjoyed himself. But he was missing me and the grandchildren, and he said he couldn’t wait to see everyone.

“He was a really devoted family man. He thought the world of our grandkids, who are nine, seven, five, and 18 months, and was looking forward to getting back and seeing them.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A post mortem will be held in due course, and we’ll be speaking to the people who were with him on holiday before the inquest takes place.”

Friends staged a charity concert in aid of Jamie’s family at Thurnscoe Ex Servicemen’s Club last night. One said: “Jamie was a trustee at the club, and had been a member for over 20 years. He had so many friends, everyone’s shattered by what’s happened.”
