Play-off-chasing Rotherham United produced one of their results of the season as they held table-topping Wigan Athletic to a goalless draw at the DW Stadium.

The Millers were full value for their hard-earned point that consolidates their fourth-place spot in League One with only four matches of the regular season left to play.

Manager Paul Warne's 4-5-1 formation, showing four changes from the starting 11 that toppled Fleetwood Town last week, worked perfectly as his side restricted the division's top scorers to only a handful of chances.

After a performance full of grit and determination, Rotherham are six points clear of the teams just below them, Scunthorpe United and Plymouth Argyle.

The Millers could have taken the lead after only 26 seconds as Matt Palmer found Jon Taylor down the right and the winger's cross fell to Michael Smith whose shot was kept out only by a stunning block from Chey Dunkley.

Smith glanced a header wide from Taylor's supply soon after and Rotherham passed up another great chance to go ahead on seven minutes. Josh Emmanuel drove into the penalty area and Ryan Williams hit his effort from the left too close to Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton.

The home side didn't show until the 14th minute when Will Grigg shot wide after his initial attempt had been parried by Marek Rodak and Grigg missed the target again 14 minutes later with a header.

Opportunities were few and far between in the second half as the Millers frustrated the division's best team with a gutsy, organised display full of defensive resilience.

Gary Roberts shot for Wigan but Rodak's save was comfortable while at the other end Williams was only inches away as he cut inside from the left and bent a 20-yard right-footer towards the top corner.

Michael Jacobs lifted an effort over the bar in the 79th minute and James Vaughan was even more wasteful in time added on, but the Millers deserved those moments of good fortune as a confirmed play-off berth grows ever nearer.
