They withstood a second-half bombardment to inflict on the play-off-chasing Owls their first home defeat since August. Not since 1981 have the Millers lost in S6.

The Rotherham survival bandwagon is now really rolling under new boss Neil Warnock.

They played much the better first-half football and deservedly led at half-time thanks to Matt Derbyshire's 21st-minute goal.

Lee Frecklington played in a low ball across the box and Derbyshire was on hand at the back post to steer the ball home.

There was controversy in the 35th minute when Aiden McGeady throught he'd scored with a deflected shot.

The effort was ruled out, to the anger of the home crowd, by the assistant referee, although it was unclear whether it was for offside or because the ball went out of play in the build-up to McGeady's strike.

The visitors could have been even further clear as Grant Ward and Danny Ward both volleyed good chances wide.

Wednesday were immediately more dangerous after the break thanks to the introduction of Lucas Joao and Ross Wallace smacked the bar with a shot after 52 minutes.

They attacked Rotherham throughout the second half but the Millers' defiance was heroic.

Rotherham showed two changes to the side which saw off Brentford 2-1 last week as Warnock brought in Grant Ward and Danny Ward for starts, with Jerome Thomas and Leon Best moving to the bench.

The joyful visitors even had the best chance of the second period, Richie Smallwood missing a sitter on the break to make it 2-0 in time added on.
