With MK Dons drawing at Preston North End, the Millers kept the gap between themselves and the drop zone at nine points ... and now there are only four matches left for the Dons to try to catch them.

After a slow start, Rotherham should have taken the lead on 17 minutes, but Richard Wood headed over with only goalkeeper Dorus de Vries to beat from Greg Halford's free-kick.

Three minutes later, de Vries had to be at his best to claw away Joe Mattock's deflected shot and, two minutes after that, Matt Derbyshire just failed to connect right in front of goal when Grant Ward's miskicked shot headed his way.

Forest responded with a shot just wide from dangerman Ryan Mendes on 29 minutes and finished the first half the better side.

Rotherham were unchanged for the third match in a row, with key midfielder Lee Frecklington, who had limped out of last week's 4-0 drubbing of MK Dons with a stiff calf, declared fit.

The Millers had the better of the second half. Derbyshire sent a dipping long-range volley inches wide, while Wood smacked the bar with a header and then missed with two more headed attempts.

For the visitors, Mendes was foiled by Lee Camp and Henri Lansbury went clean through only to lose his footing as he bore down on goal.

Substitute Danny Ward was desperately close to putting the home side in front in the 88th shot with a bending strike on the turn that was a whisker wide, but, a minute later, Camp had to produce a brilliant save to keep out a Mendes shot when the ball had fallen kindly for the Forest attacker.

In the end, a draw was a fair result in a match where both sides had chances and both teams defended well.
