Extra cheer for children in care

BARNSLEY councillors decided against exchanging Christmas cards this year – instead contributing to a fund to buy extra presents for children in care at three homes in the borough.

About £700 in donations and pledges has been raised by the elected members, and the young people in short stay and long term residential care have been asked what they would like to receive for Christmas.

Coun Tim Cheetham said: “As corporate parents to these children, we like to take any opportunity to improve their lives and at this time of year we wanted to make this gift direct from us to them.”
