An MOT centre which went up in flames in Sheffield was destroyed in the blaze.

Firefighters called to the blaze on Herries Road at 7.45pm last night said the MOT centre was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

They found that the unit had eight garages underneath which were also gutted in the fire.

Three cars in the unit were also destroyed.

A fire service spokeswoman said firefighters battled to prevent the flames from spreading to neighbouring businesses.

She said five homes were evacuated, with residents allowed back in when firefighters left the scene at 2am.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
