Ex-Sheffield working men's club to become car sales lot

Planning permission has been granted to turn the former Woodhouse Mill Working Men’s Club on Retford Road into a car sales lot.

The club closed in early 2015 and has fallen into a state of disrepair.

HR Car Sales is to take over the site, with the front section of the building being demolished and the rear hall turned into a sales office, with the bar area, stage and concert hall floor removed before the site is redesigned.

The plans have been given the green light by Sheffield Council planning officers.

A report by the council said: “The proposals will bring this dilapidated building, which is falling into a state of disrepair, back into active use.

“In terms of meeting local needs, it is not clear if there is a need for a car sales use in the locality, however if there is, the proposal is located in an accessible location close to the Sheffield/Rotherham boundary and as such the use could easily serve local people.

“Conversely, given that the vehicles are likely to be advertised for sale on the internet people could travel from further afield.”

“The movement of vehicles associated with the use is not considered to give rise to any major noise issues or to affect residents any more than the operation of the car park associated with the former working men’s club use.

“It should also be noted that the development will remove a late night entertainment venue which would not have had any planning restrictions over its operation.”

The car sales lot will be open between 9am and 6pm on Mondays to Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
