Sheridan was last week appointed as Oldham Athletic boss and has moved to bring in Shirtliff as his assistant.

“I know him well from my Sheffield Wednesday days but he’s a good assistant manager and knows the game inside out," Sheridan told Oldham's official website.

“He’s done well in this division with Danny Wilson. He’s been a manager and assistant at Bury and Mansfield and he was an excellent defensive player.

"He will help us be more organised and I’m delighted to get him. He can’t be here for Saturday unfortunately but he will be here for the Shrewsbury game.”

Shirtliff was youth team coach at Barnsley and Leicester City following his retirement from playing.

He was assistant manager at Mansfield Town before taking over the reins in 2005. He has since had spells as assistant at Tranmere Rovers, Swindon Town and Bury.
