A former nurse from Rotherham diagnosed with mesothelioma - a terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos - is speaking out to raise awareness of the disease on Action Mesothelioma Day.

Kalliopi Copley, aged 68, from Wickersley, was diagnosed in November 2012 and said she is determined to raise awareness of the disease, which claims 2,500 lives in the UK every year.

The mum-of-two believes she may have come into contact with asbestos during her work at hospitals in Rotherham and Sheffield and is taking legal action.

She said: “Asbestos is still present in public buildings like hospitals, schools and universities and this must be removed and made safe.”
