Nikki Trueman says the major fundraiser promises to be ‘a day to remember’.

The event will include a football match between Chesterfield FC legends and TV celebrities as well as a whole host of family entertainment.

It will raise money for the Once Upon a Smile charity, which helps bereaved families at their time of need, and Dementia UK.

Sixty-six-year-old Ernie, who holds the honour as Chesterfield FC’s all-time record goalscorer, was officially diagnosed as having dementia three years ago.

Nikki, 41, of Inkersall, said: “It’s harrowing and such a cruel disease.

“I think dad can remember his days as a footballer – but his language skills are deteriorating rapidly so he can’t talk about them.

“The fact he can’t speak properly anymore is really difficult for me as I always used to enjoy having banter with my dad.

“He’s completely unaware there’s anything wrong with him and thinks we’re just fussing over him and nagging him.

“He loves being at home with his set routine – he plays Sudoku all day, every day. He whizzes through them.

“He’s happy – that’s the main thing – and we can’t wait for the charity event at the Proact.

“I’ve always wanted to do this for dad.

“It promises to be a day to remember with lots of fun for all the family and I’m so grateful to everyone who’s suporting it.

“Hopefully it’ll raise a lot of money for two very important charities.”

Ernie, of Walton, scored 192 goals over three spells with the Spireites.

He walked Nikki up the aisle when she got married in 2014.

Among the Chesterfield FC legends taking part in the football match are Jack Lester, Bob Newton and Alan Birch.
