Since January last year, hundreds of workmen have been coming to the site every day as developers Urban Splash and Alumno renovate phases two and three of the iconic brutalist structure.

However, most of the contractors drive to the site, leaving the surrounding streets clogged up with cars and vans, while some also allegedly litter the area with rubbish.

Frank Bussey, who lives on Duke Street, says the problem is worst on School Lane behind his house, where visitors continually leave rubbish and park so irresponsibly no one else can use the road.

He said: “The lane behind us is full of rubbish and people can’t use the footpath because cars are parked across it but the developers just don’t seem interested in what their contractors are doing.

“I have been chatting to people who live on Norfolk Road and Talbot Street and they say they are having the same problems of too many cars and litter.

“I don’t know why the contractors don’t just use South Street or why they haven’t opened the Clay Wood site - there is space for 50 or more vans on there.”

Mr Bussey said he has spoken to the developers Urban Splash and Alumno, the council and the considerate contractor scheme but says nothing ever seems to get done.

A spokesperson for Urban Splash said: “The company takes all complaints seriously and has a record of coordinating the clearing of rubbish last year following a complaint from Mr Bussey.

“They will be in touch with Mr Bussey again to ask for more details about the current problem. It is not clear who the culprits are but Urban Splash have reminded their contractors and other workers on site of the parking restrictions and about disposing of any litter appropriately.

“Their contractors have also committed to clearing any rubbish at the end of each day and Urban Splash will monitor this.”

Almuno hope to finish the student accommodation by this September while Urban Splash say phase two will be complete a year later.
