The local authority says a number of changes to the city’s waste services, which are operated by Veolia, such as prioritising collections of black bins and clinical waste and cancelling all garden waste collections have been brought in.

Currently the Household Waste Recycling Centres remain open to Sheffield residents only. People should only visit a HWRC site if waste disposal is essential and unavoidable.

Where this is the case, residents are limited to one visit per day. Social distancing guidance MUST be observed whilst on site to maintain the safety of both the public and workforce.

Residents are asked to be patient if there are delays or queues caused by the restrictions. Whilst sites are currently open, the safety of the public and staff is paramount, and if large numbers of people visit the sites or fail to follow the guidelines, they will be forced to close.

Sheffield City Council is working closely with Veolia to minimise the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) on waste and recycling services across the city but some changes are necessary.

Business continuity plans have been implemented and an extra 28 members of staff have already been trained to support the existing workforce.

The ongoing collection and management of waste across the city during these unprecedented times is crucial. However, due to the impact of coronavirus on the service, it is necessary to make some changes to services.

Gillian Charters, Head of Waste Management, said: “The ongoing collection of waste is critical and we are doing everything we can to keep the service operating as fully as possible.

“In addition to suspension of the green bin service, from immediate effect, we’re putting in place limits to the number of vehicles allowed at each Household Waste Recycling Centre at any one time. The Government’s advice is clear, people should avoid using the sites unless absolutely necessary.

“Due to the ongoing threat of coronavirus and impact on public health, the black bin and clinical waste collections will be prioritised to ensure that essential services remain in operation, allowing us to keep Sheffield as clean and safe as possible.

“We would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding as we face an ever changing situation.”
