Sheffield waste contractor Veolia pledges to reinstate new paving after digging 6ft hole for 'essential works'

“Temporary asphalt will be applied before we return to carry out infrastructure improvements, after which flagstones will be permanently reinstated”

A deep hole outside Sheffield Town Hall will be filled in - before contractors return for more works.

Waste contractor Veolia said it would fill the hole on Pinstone Street, close to the entrance to the Town Hall, on Friday, July 10.

The surface would be covered with temporary asphalt for an unspecified time, it added.

Veolia is the city council’s private waste contractor. It burns rubbish at the incinerator at Bernard Road, where steam is produced to heat public buildings including the town hall and City Hall.

Last month, contractors dug down 6ft to reach heating pipes, wrecking new paving.

A spokesperson for Veolia said: “Veolia is carrying out a first phase of wider works on Sheffield’s District Heating Network, which provides heat and hot water to local homes and businesses, generated from waste.

“Temporary asphalt will be applied before we return to carry out infrastructure improvements, after which flagstones will be permanently reinstated.

“We are working closely with Sheffield City Council to minimise disruption to residents and businesses, and are thankful to residents and business owners for their patience as this essential work is completed.”
