Veolia - which manages rubbish in the city for Sheffield Council - decided to keep its household waste recycling centres open, despite calls to close them following concerns people were flouting social distancing rules.

It has now said it is tightening restrictions and warned police would hand out big fines to those caught not following the rules.

Sheffield Council said: “Residents carrying out house or garage clearances or with other non-essential disposal needs should store this waste at home until the sites are operating as normal, or contact a registered skip hire company.

“Residents needing to visit a Household Waste Recycling Centre for essential waste disposal are limited to one visit per day. Social distancing guidance must be observed while on site to maintain the safety of both the public and workforce.

“Residents are asked to be patient if there are delays or queues caused by the restrictions. Vehicles will be asked to move on if they are causing safety issues on the highway.

“Whilst sites are currently open, the safety of the public and staff is paramount, and if large numbers of people visit the sites or fail to follow the guidelines, the council will be forced to close them.”
