‘People have to take responsibility’: Bins overflow and litter dumped in Sheffield parks

People across Sheffield have been angered by the huge number of visitors who have left piles of empty wrappers, left over food and barbeques in parks over the weekend.

One man from Wincobank has even spotted a rat amongst some overspilling bins near the city centre.

Large groups of people gathered in Endcliffe Park, Hillsborough Park and Norfolk Park over the weekend, having picnics while enjoying the warm weather which is said to have caused some of the mess.

A Wincobank resident was ‘disgusted’ to find a rat scurrying in between overflowing bins in Hillsborough that were full to the brim with takeaway boxes.

Mark Norman, 34, saw the rodent near fast-food chains on Penistone Road.

“There was a big rat that ran across and I just thought that's disgusting”, he said.

"You would think people would take a bit more responsibility with this virus and everything that is going on and keep it tidy.

"It's not just businesses fault but also people who are going to get food are not disposing of rubbish properly in the bin.”

The maintenance worker explained how he fears that people have forgotten that the country is still in lockdown.

"I think it just makes me feel angry that people are doing what they want really”, Mark added.

"It's wrong, I wouldn't go along the street and drop my crisp packet, I would put it in the bin.

Rubbish was also pictured scattered over parks in Bakewell with one local resident, commenting “If you publish these [pictures] it might pick a few consciences.

“Disgusting!”

Footage posted to social media showed volunteers in Endcliffe Park clearing away mounds of rubbish that been left by people the night before.

Katherine Gartland explained in a post that she “got up early to do a morning workout in the park” but instead was left “spending an hour picking up litter” before she could exercise.

She went on to say: “The man who’s job it is to collect the litter said it took him seven hours yesterday.”

Sheffield City Council were contacted for comment and we are waiting on their reply.
