Join the Great Yorkshire Creature Count for wildlife

The project has been launched by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

The wildlife trusts are are asking people to take part in an exclusive first - a mass participation event to count and record all the wildlife species we can see from our windows and in our yards and gardens.

For one weekend only, people all over Yorkshire will be joining in the Great Yorkshire Creature Count.

The challenge is to look for and record all the different wildlife that you can see from your own doorsteps from midday on Saturday, June 20 for 24 hours.

Whether that’s looking and listening out of a window, peering into and under pots and window boxes, exploring the nooks and crannies of a terraced yard, or scouring a leafy garden – the trust wants to know what you see and where you see it.

With social interaction and travel limited, now is the perfect opportunity to embark on a Yorkshire-wide wildlife count, the wildlife groups believe.

They say that our gardens make up more of the UK’s green space than all the nature reserves combined.

There have been plenty of good news stories about wildlife making a comeback while we isolate inside but the truth is that human impacts are having devastating effects on the UK’s wildlife.
