'Go through the rubbish and fine them': Angry residents speak out about fly-tipping and rubbish in Sheffield suburb

The spoke out after one disgusted resident, Bert O’Bert, took photographs of piles of bags of rubbish and household waste on the streets of Page Hall over the Easter weekend.

He called for action and said it is hardly surprising that the suburb has a rat infestation.

Mr O’Bert said the amount of rubbish dumped in Page Hall is a health hazard.

In response, and posting on Facebook, Janice Griffin suggested that landlords should be fined if their tenants are found to be responsible.;

She said: “Who owns the property, are they rented? The landlords should be fined also. They have a responsibility too.”

Nicola Liversidge suggested the use of ‘street cameras’ and fines for the culprits.

Janet Cleminson-Chapman also agreed with fines and suggested the penalty should be as much as £1,000.

Eric Richardson added: “Fit street cameras and lock them up or better still stop their benefits and make them clean it up.”

Linda Hutchinson said: “I feel for people who were brought up and lived here and have happy memories, it must be heartbreaking.”

Lisa Bellamy Street called for cameras 24 hours-a-day.

Alison Christian said: “The council will clear it and it will be same again next week.

“If other suburbs did it week in week out like this there would be a right uproar.

“The council needs to go through the rubbish and fine them, even if its fining the same people every week. They’ll soon get get up of the fines.”

George Okrasa added: “Get a police forensics team in there.

“The people that do this are so stupid that they will have omitted to remove any damning evidence, such as utility bills, so they can be identified and hit with huge fines to more than cover the clean-up costs.

“Repeat offenders need to be slapped behind bars if you're ever going to stop this disgraceful selfish behaviour.”

Sheffield City Council has been approached for a comment.
