Firefighters save stranded baby lamb stuck on cliff ledge near Sheffield

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service helped to save a lamb that was stranded on a tiny ledge above a 20ft drop on May 15.

Members of the rope team were filmed abseiling over a cliff edge in a field in Dunford Bridge, near Sheffield, after the RSPCA received reports of an animal in distress.

RSPCA inspector Sara Jordan said: “Members of the public had amazingly spotted the little lamb stuck on a tiny ledge just below the cliff edge crying for mum.

“The sheep’s field sloped down to the rocky cliff and mum was waiting nearby.

“The cliff was jagged with rocks and dropped around 20ft down to water below so the lamb was in a really perilous position and couldn’t have got back up to the field on his own.”

She alerted firefighters after she arrived at the scene and realised she couldn’t save the animal herself.

“They managed to abseil over the lip of the cliff just a few feet down to the poor little lamb and grab hold of him before winching him back up to the field and reunite him with his mum,” Sara added.

“I checked him over and, thankfully, he wasn’t injured from his fall.

“He was very, very lucky.

“It was lovely to see him toddling off across the grass with his mum.”
