Drained Sheffield canal looks unrecognisable as major engineering work overruns

But Victoria Quays, where the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal ends, is looking very different at the moment as work continues on a major renovation project.

Contractors are re-lining an 80-metre stretch for the Canal & River Trust, which is responsible for maintaining the historic waterway.

Work began in early January but has been delayed due to issues with access to the site and the amount of silt in the canal, meaning the closure is now expected to remain in place until March 31.

The towpath is also closed while the work takes place, and the trust has apologised for the invonvenience caused by the essential repair job.

The former Hilton hotel overlooking the canal basin recently reopened as the Best Western Plus Quays Hotel.
