Enthralling mix of film and music on stage in Sheffield

The event is part of the current concerts season organised by the University of Sheffield at the Western Bank venue.

Voices Appeared: La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc is a classic silent film, made in 1928 by Carl Theodore Dreyer, about the trial of Joan of Arc, the 15th-century French teenager who was put to death for claiming she heard the voice of God.

When first released the film was banned but it has gradually been recognised as a masterpiece. The Orlando Consort, a male a capella group, whose haunting harmonies evoke the music of the period, help to bring the story to life in an incredibly powerful way.

A spokesman for the university said: "When they sold out at The Barbican in January, it was hard to say if this was a film experience accompanied by singers or a concert accompanied by a visual narrative.

"What you can say is that you will never have experienced anything like it and in these dark days it might give you the kind of soul energy you need."
