15 performers from the Mexborough-based ‘Read to Write’ group will present the sonnets at next Tuesday’s event, which has been coordinated by nationally acclaimed poet Ian Parks.

The group, which has been running for over a year, has already appeared at a number of venues across the region, performing their own poetry as well as popular favourites.

Group director Ian Parks said: “We are bringing all of our experience to this polished performance of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, appealing to anyone who has an interest in the beautiful language of the Bard.

“The Sonnets are as alive today as when they were written by Shakespeare 400 years ago and we are delighted to be bringing them to Mexborough.

“Read to Write is based on a simple premise: the reading of good poetry leads to the writing of good poetry and the idea for the group grew from conversations with writers in Mexborough. We now meet for an hour every week and occasionally have open workshop sessions. The meetings are free and open to all, designed on a drop-in basis.”

The group will be at 30Mexborough Café and Emporium on Main Street next Tuesday from 7pm. There will be a small admission charge, to include food, and everyone is welcome.
