England's Euro 2016 Squad: Five local players on the plane to France

England will be represented by five South Yorkshire/North Derbyshire players at this summer's European Championships in France after the official announcement was made today.

Sheffield's Jamie Vardy and Kyle Walker are joined by Gary Cahill from Dronfield, Barnsley-born John Stone and Danny Rose, who hails from Doncaster.

England coach Roy Hodgson, having initially named a 26-man squad, has cut Leicester City's Danny Drinkwater, Newcastle's Andros Townsend and Manchester City's Fabian Delph, who picked up a groin injury last week, meaning that teenage Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford retains his place after a debut goal against Australia on Friday.

All five of the players selected from South Yorkshire had been expected to be on the place to France.

Vardy's goals for club and country have given Hodgson a headache as the coach ponders how best to incorporate England's record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, who finished the season with the most Premier League goals with 25 - one ahead of Vardy - plus Daniel Sturridge, who though often injured remains one of the most lethal strikers in the country when fit.

Tottenham's former Sheffield United defender Kyle Walker and Spurs team mate Rose, will vie for full back roles with Liverpool's Nathaniel Clyne and Southeampton's Ryan Bertrand respectively. Cahill's experience should see the Chelsea central defender hold that position leaving Stone to battle with Chris Smalling for the other spot.

England welcome Portugal to Wembley on Thursday in their final preparation match before Euro 2016.
